It’s in the details…
Each piece is handmade It’s in the details…
Each piece is handmade from porcelain, finished with my name mark fired into the clay, and colored with wild clays I’ve gathered myself over the past 14 years.
I’m looking forward to spending more time in the workshop — creating new things with my hands, exploring, and slowly bringing my wild clay workshop Ceramic Paint back to life ⛰️⛏️🧱
In the meantime, thank you for all your kind messages, your patience, and your continued support.
It’s been quiet here for a while. Over the past It’s been quiet here for a while.
Over the past year, life asked something different from me. Some unexpected challenges shifted my focus, and I needed to step back and slow everything down.
This time away gave me space to reset, reflect, and slowly reconnect with what inspires me.
I’m not rushing back, but I’m finding my way here again — starting with a few moments from Portugal ☀️
Thanks for being here.
Shot from a porcelain factory on Kyushu Island, Ja Shot from a porcelain factory on Kyushu Island, Japan.

As part of my project, ‘Latitude for Uniqueness,’ I visited several quarries and factories to gain a deeper understanding of the porcelain clay production process in Japan. Compared to my initial research in Cornwall, I found that Japanese kaolin is remarkably pure and of exceptionally high quality.

Focusing on Arita porcelain, I explored the raw materials used in its production, visiting the quarries and factories where this famous porcelain clay is sourced and processed. I discovered that the kaolin harvested in and around Arita is exceptionally pure, producing minimal waste. However, even these small deposits of mineral waste provided me and Sehyo Pottery with enough material to develop seven new colors specific to Arita and one entirely new clay body. Like me, Sehyo is a specialist in material investigation.

Since both the new colors and clay incorporate leftover materials from the standard manufacturing process, the resulting tableware is crafted entirely from a single source of raw material. The new clay body I developed is a mixture of kaolin and black Amakusa stone. Traditionally, white Amakusa stone is used in the production of Arita porcelain, while the black stone is discarded. By repurposing this overlooked material, I have introduced a unique color palette that emphasizes natural variation.

The final collection consists of two series of simple, refined forms. The first series highlights the seven newly developed pigments, while the second, a grey-toned series, is made from the new clay body. This project not only extends the possibilities of Arita porcelain but also demonstrates the potential of sustainable material use in contemporary ceramic design.

The research provides insights into how waste streams from the local kaolin industry can be used as pigments to color clay. The outcomes of the various recipes are beautiful, and through the project, I explain and demonstrate why it is important to utilize normally discarded materials to reduce environmental impact.
